Understanding Browser Video Format Support in 2024

The most common question we receive at uvideoplayer.com is: "Why won't my file play?" The answer almost always boils down to a misunderstanding of containers versus codecs.

Containers vs. Codecs

A video file (like .mp4 or .mkv) is essentially a wrapper—a container. Inside that container are the actual video and audio streams, which are compressed using specific algorithms called codecs.

Browsers don't just need to support the container; they must possess the decoding software (or hardware integration) for the specific codecs inside.

Example Scenario: The MKV Dilemma

You have an .mkv file. Chrome does support the Matroska (MKV) container. However, if the video inside is encoded with HEVC (H.265) and the audio is AC3 (Dolby Digital), Chrome will fail to play it because it lacks support for those specific, proprietary codecs due to licensing costs.

If you want guaranteed playback across every modern browser, device, and operating system without relying on fallback transcoding, H.264 video with AAC audio inside an MP4 container remains the undisputed king of web video.
