Understanding Aspect Ratios

Aspect ratio refers to the proportional relationship between a video's width and its height.

  • 16:9 is the standard widescreen format for almost all modern displays, YouTube, and broadcast TV.
  • 9:16 is the standard for vertical video (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts).
  • 21:9 is ultrawide/cinemascope, often used in feature films.

Note on Mod-2: Video encoders (like H.264) strongly prefer dimensions that are divisible by 2 (or ideally 16, known as macroblocks). The calculator rounds to the nearest whole pixel, but you should manually ensure your final dimensions are even numbers to prevent encoder errors.
